Formatting data carriers does not provide 100% security. Simple tools can usually be used to quickly restore the data.
Although erasure programs overwrite the data areas several times, they can only be used with functioning data carriers. In addition, these write processes usually take several hours!
Conclusion: Data protection-compliant erasure/disposal of magnetic hard disks and data tapes can only be achieved with a certified degausser.
